        This is Tiare doing the post for my mom. At school we have this class we can go to during lunch and learn dances and songs. It's called Culture we learn all types of dances and songs  from other cultures. My teacher Mrs. Tararo is in charge of it. We learned a dance from Samoa & were going to be learning a dance from the Cook Islands  (and song) and a Maori dance and song. So Mandy ( one of the BYU girls who's my teacher) knows how to dance and stuff, Mrs. Tararo asked her if she could teach the kids in Culture a hip - hop dance. So she's teaching it in the video. Atticus didn't come that day. It was really fun

Cave Hike--total darkness, rushing river--heaps of adventure!

Here we are entering the cave for our 362 meter long hike through an absolutely pitch dark cave upstream through a river.  The only light that you see in the photos below is from our torches (flash lights and head lamps and our camera flashes).  When we turned the torches off, it was pitch black--you could not even see your hand in front of your face!!!

The river starts off pretty shallow--only about mid-calf high--but then it got deeper!! Tiare was on one of the girl's back because at the first part once you got a little bit in, it was pretty high. Even on a girl's back, the water went to just below Tiare's arm pits. The rest of the way wasn't that deep.

You will notice very clearly that I do NOT have a head lamp on, nor do I have my own torch.  This is very symbolic of my NZ goal of not being such a control freak, trusting in others, and just going with the flow!

Notice the watermark on the girl's grey shirt--up to about her chest.  Her name is Emily, and she is about my size.



The mist from the waterfalls was in the air--thus the spots on the photo above and below.  You can also see how narrow the cave was at certain points.


Sweet Natalie in the black shorts and jacket helped Tiare all the way through as Chris and I were a few hikers behind them.  She literally carried Tiare on her back in the deep parts.  It was very humbling to be far away from Tiare and not able to help her and to rely on someone else to do so--again relates to my goals for myself during this New Zealand stay!

Here I am following in dear Emily's footsteps--the blond girl in the purple jacket.  She had a headlight, and if I did not literally follow in her footsteps, I could not see where I was going as it was so dark.  Chris was behind me with his headlight too.  In this picture, you can see the reflections of our feet through the water if you look carefully.  I just kept saying to myself to just follow directly in Emily's footsteps one step at a time.  It really was a religious type of experience.  I couldn't help but think of following in Christ's footsteps and just doing the small acts of obedience one step at a time.

Here's our climb up the final waterfall.  The really steep part with the strong water flowing down is below the picture, but trust me it was really hard to climb up.

Here we are outside of the other end of the cave and river.  This hike really was one of the most exhilarating experiences ever!!  Here's a link to how to get there if you are ever in the Christchurch area--seriously, you have got to do it!!

We went to Milford Sound on the South Island during our trip to Queenstown. We went on this large boat and it was quite beautiful. An incredible amount of waterfalls, sea life, and gorgeous mountains. All of our pictures are not uploading properly, but here's a smattering.

Fly Fishing New Zealand

I have this real cool coffee table book about Fly Fishing. It highlights 7 top fishing spots in the world. New Zealand is one of the featured spots. Being an avid fly fisherman, I knew I had to check it out once I got here.

One of our contacts in Queenstown happened to know the rivers, so he took me out to some spots (he's also a photographer-hence the cool picts-thanks Johnny!)



The locales were mind blowing-so beautiful. One of the major differences of fishing in NZ compared to Utah is that NZ does not stock their rivers-there are not as many fish, but when you get one, it's pretty good.


Right when we got out of the car at our first spot-Wanaka-these ducks marched right up to me-it was so cool. So I pulled out some of my dried apples and we had a snack together


Next day went to a spot in Glenorchy-absolutely beautiful, but got skunked-I didn't even see a fish! But from the pictures below, you can still see how cool it was to be out there

Camping at the Coramandle by Tiare

Here are some pics from when we went camping. The Coramandle is where they filmed Narnia # 2 Prince Caspian.We left Auckland on Friday and came back on Sunday. So beautiful!!! All of the girls cam but three, so there were:

So all together there was 29 people. It was so fun!!! We went and dove down in the ocean for some powa ( Maori for abalone) and kena ( Maori for sea urchin) We tried sea urchin tongue!! It tasted like chewy salt water that was slimey. We went to the beach and that was supper fun. Each night for dinner we had hot dogs and Tim tam slams!!!!! ( tim tams and hot chocolate!!) YUM!!! :) We had a wonderful time!

Hello From New Zealand!

So we arrived safely to the beautiful country of New Zealand. Ramona has been successfully teaching her class to 20 wonderful BYU students (her classes meet at the local church). I've been home schooling the kids, doing some reading/research and surfing!! (I've realized how much I suppress my love for surfing while living in Utah)

Our new local ward has been amazing-really enjoying getting to know the saints down here. It has rained everyday we've been here-that's been a little bit of a bummer, but not too bad as it rains for a bit, then goes away.
